Celebrating International Men's Day: Breaking Stereotypes and Promoting Wellbeing

International Men's Day
International Men's Day

On 19th November, International Men’s Day celebrates worldwide the positive value men bring to the world, their families and communities. We highlight positive role models and raise awareness of men’s wellbeing. Our theme for 2023 is “Zero Male suicide”. Together we can stop male suicide.

Suicide is a complex issue with multifaceted causes, often involving a combination of mental health challenges, social pressures, economic hardships, and personal struggles. According to the World Health Organisation, nearly 800,000 people die by suicide every year, making it the 18th leading cause of death globally. For every completed suicide, many more individuals contemplate or attempt suicide, making it a pressing concern that requires collective action.

Contrary to common misconceptions, this day is not about overshadowing the importance of women but rather acknowledging the unique challenges faced by men and promoting positive masculinity. In this blog post, we'll explore the significance of International Men's Day, shed light on key issues faced by men, and discuss how we can collectively foster a more inclusive and supportive environment.

The primary goals of International Men's Day include promoting positive role models, raising awareness of men's health issues, and challenging gender stereotypes. It provides an opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of men in various fields and address the challenges they may face in areas such as mental health, relationships, and societal expectations.

One of the central themes of International Men's Day is challenging stereotypes that can negatively impact men's wellbeing. Society often imposes unrealistic expectations on men, dictating how they should express their emotions, handle stress, or pursue their interests. By breaking free from these stereotypes, men can embrace their individuality and contribute positively to their communities.

International Men's Day is a platform to draw attention to men's health issues, encouraging discussions about mental health, prostate cancer, and other conditions that disproportionately affect men. By promoting awareness and destigmatising seeking help, we can contribute to healthier, more fulfilling lives for men.

Positive masculinity emphasises qualities such as empathy, vulnerability, and emotional intelligence. International Men's Day encourages a redefinition of traditional gender norms, fostering an environment where men feel empowered to express their emotions and seek support when needed. This shift towards positive masculinity benefits not only men but also contributes to healthier relationships and communities.

While recognising the challenges faced by men, International Men's Day is an opportunity to celebrate their achievements and contributions. Whether it's in the realms of science, arts, sports, or community service, men have made significant positive impacts throughout history. This day serves as a reminder to appreciate and acknowledge these contributions.

Workplaces can participate in International Men's Day by organising events, discussions, and activities that promote the wellbeing of men. Encouraging open conversations about men's issues, supporting men's health initiatives, and celebrating positive role models are all meaningful ways to contribute.

International Men's Day is not about diminishing the importance of women's rights and equality but is a call to recognise and address the unique challenges faced by men. By fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment, breaking stereotypes, and promoting positive masculinity, we can contribute to the wellbeing and success of men in our communities. So, let's celebrate International Men's Day with empathy, understanding, and a commitment to building a more equitable world for everyone.
